Papers in the special section in this issue explore different avenues taken by North Korea, both prior to and after it emerged as a sovereign state, to build socialist ideology into its society as well as into South Korean society during the three-month occupation period early in the Korean War. Further papers in this issue consider governmental responses and recording of fire outbreaks and arson in Chosŏn during the fifteenth century, regionalism among gay men in South Korea and Japanese efforts at Imperial self-promotion in Sweden through archaeology in colonial Korea. The European Journal of Korean Studies Vol 23 (1) also offers reviews of some of the most intriguing recent book-length writing, including Siegfried Hecker and Elliot Serbin's, Hinge Points: An Inside Look at North Korea’s Nuclear Program and Sergei Kurbanov's, Очерки истории Северной Кореи: хроники 2000–2022 ("Essays on the History of North Korea. Chronicles of 2000–2022").
