[KS] Online Workshop: An Introductory Session on the Newspaper Research Companion (NRC)

We are pleased to invite you to an introductory session on the Newspaper Research Companion (NRC), CrossAsia's exciting new AI-powered platform for researching digitized newspaper archives.

The Newspaper Research Companion<https://smex-ctp.trendmicro.com:443/wis/clicktime/v1/query?url=https%3a%2f%2fcrossasia.org%2fnrc&umid=af5a8a03-c760-4d6b-99f4-5eb4ebe8cff9&auth=e868a51a09775a73691d9e903bc3249a2a8275ee-dab5207e77f9561b322a94f99dd3f619f0bbffe8> enables researchers to explore newspaper archives by asking direct questions rather than searching for keywords. The platform understands the intent behind the query and surfaces relevant material across multiple languages, currently covering over 37 million articles from 68 newspaper titles in Chinese, German, English, and Russian, spanning 1785 to 2024. Each result features an AI-generated summary alongside links to the original source, allowing researchers to quickly assess relevance and verify findings. The platform compiles results into a downloadable report in the user’s chosen language, including Korean. (We are currently in discussions with Korean content providers and hope to incorporate Korean newspaper archives into the Newspaper Research Companion soon.)

The NRC is a service open to everyone, though only registered users can access linked licensed materials. In this introduction, we will walk you through the key features of the NRC and demonstrate how to use it effectively for your research. We particularly encourage you to bring your own research questions, which we can test directly in the session to show how the platform might support your work.

Please note that the NRC is currently in early access as we continue to expand available materials and refine features based on user feedback. Some underlying licensing agreements are still being finalized.
