Dear Korean Studies Scholars,

On behalf of NAVER, the Task Force on Korean Studies E-Resources would like to introduce Naver News Library <http://newslibrary.naver.com>, which is freely available to overseas libraries and institutions, but by IP authentication only.

As indicated in the attached information sheet, Naver News Library is a full-text Korean newspaper article database containing the following four major newspapers:

- Tonga ilbo東亞日報 = Dong-A ilbo : 1920-1999

- Kyŏnghyang sinmun 京鄕新聞 = Kyunghyang Shinmun : 1946-1999

- Maeil kyŏngje sinmun每日經濟新聞 = Maeil Business Newspaper : 1966-1999

- Han’gyŏre 한겨레 = The Hankyoreh : 1988-1999

Its full-text keyword searching and navigating functions are quite powerful, and display options in three ways - original text, Han’gul version text, and original images – are available to users. Quality and legibility of the original newspaper images is also impressive, even for old newspaper issues in 1920s.

By IP authentication, overseas library and institution users do not have to use their individual login ID and password for advanced searches. NAVER generously offers free services to overseas libraries and institutions by IP authentication, in consideration of potential obstacles and difficulties in creating individual NAVER IDs and passwords by foreign scholars and students.

Miree Ku of Duke University kindly created a link in the Collective Subscription of Korean e-resources LibGuide site for your convenience, and two attachments are also available for you to download through this link:

Please submit your institution’s IP addresses using the attached IP application form to Naver newslibrary at nhn.com<mailto:newslibrary at nhn.com> for this free service.

If any librarian, who is responsible for Korean Studies or East Asian Studies materials, available in your institution, please refer this e-mail to her or him. If no librarians available to take care of this matter in your institution, you may be able to find out your institution’s IP address ranges from your IT department, and apply directly to NAVER by yourself.

For any further details and questions, please contact NAVER newslibrary at nhn.com<mailto:newslibrary at nhn.com> or Mr. Sunghyun Rhee rhee at nhn.com<mailto:rhee at nhn.com> directly.

Thank you very much for your attention.

Best wishes,

Task Force on Korean Studies E-Resources

I am writing to inform you of our new policy regarding NAVER News Library<http://newslibrary.naver.com/> service.

As you are well aware, NAVER provides a digital archive service for articles published between 1920 and 1999 from three major Korean newspapers: Dong-A Ilbo, Kyunghyang Shinmun and Maeil Business Newspaper (Hankyoreh will be added in October). This is a free service that allows users to perform key word searches and navigate archives according to date.

For advanced search, however, users needed to log in with their NAVER ID. We felt that this policy inconvenienced most users outside of Korea. Today, I am delighted to inform you that we have decided to allow users at overseas libraries and academic institutions to bypass the log-in process once their institutions obtain our IP authentication. Please read the attached PDF document for further details.

I would appreciate it if you would share the information with other overseas institutions, especially with East Asian Libraries throughout the world. Institutions interested in participating in our new policy should fill out the attached IP application form (MS-Word file) and return it to us at newslibrary at nhn.com<mailto:newslibrary at nhn.com>.

Best regards,
Sunghyun Rhee
